100 years of the Russian submarine history

During 100 years of Russian submarine forces there were 1150 submarines. 1083 of them of Russian design and 67 of foreign projects.

Of the 1150 Russian submarines:

- 906  were/are diesel-electric submarines and 244 were/are nuclear powered;

- 38 were built for export (1968-2000)

- 76 diesel-electric and one nuclear powered submarines  were given to foreign navies on permanent or temporary (on lease) basis from 1954 till 1997. The nuke is Charlie-class (project 670) to Indian Navy where she served as "Chakra".

-161 were irretrievably lost (from 1909 till 2000): 128 of them lost in wartime and 33 in peace time  (including 6 nuclear) of accidents.

Of the 244 nuclear powered 56 belong to the 1st generation of the nuclear powered submarines, 150 belong to the second generation and 38 belong  to the 3rd one.

 

"Delfin" (dolphin) The first combat submarine of the Russian submarine forces. Commissioned in 1903 as  destroyer # 150. Assigned to submarines on March 19, 1906

 

 

Diesel-electric "Sankt-Peterburg" (Saint-Petersburg). Newest Russian submarine.
